Sustainability at TC10K
Running Toward a Future Where Community Events Leave a Positive Footprint
The RunSport Victoria Society is committed to reducing environmental impact, increasing waste diversion, and building a culture of sustainability across our events.
Our Commitment
As one of Victoria’s largest community events, we recognize our responsibility to lead by example. Sustainability at TC10K is not a side initiative — it is integrated into race planning, operations, and participant experience.
Reduce
Minimize materials used across race operations and supplier chains,
Divert
Keep as much waste as possible out of landfill through composting and recycling.
Educate
Empower participants and spectators to make informed, sustainable choices.
Improve
Measure our impact annually and continuously raise the bar.

How We Deliver a Low-Impact Race
Waste Diversion Stations
Clearly labeled multi-stream sorting stations are placed throughout the start/finish area and key course locations. Trained Green Team volunteers guide proper sorting and reduce contamination at the source.
We strategically place landfill-only bins in high-contamination areas such as near porta potties and the medical tent to ensure sanitary materials are managed safely and do not compromise recyclable or compostable streams.
Hand Sorting & Responsible Processing
After collection, our team hand-sorts event waste to remove contamination and maximize diversion rates. This extra step allows us to significantly increase recycling and compost recovery beyond standard event practices.
All recyclable materials are transported to a responsible recycling facility, ensuring they are properly processed and managed according to local environmental standards.
Water & Material Reduction
Refill stations help reduce reliance on single-use plastic bottles, while procurement decisions prioritize reusable, recyclable, or compostable materials.
Sustainability planning begins months before race day and includes supplier coordination, volunteer training, live monitoring, and post-event reporting.

Where Your Waste Goes
Step 1: Sorted On Site
Participants use clearly labeled waste stations with Green Team support to place materials in the correct stream.
Step 2: Hand-Sorted
Our team reviews collected materials to remove contamination and maximize diversion.
Step 3: Responsibly Processed
Recyclables and organics are delivered to certified local facilities for proper processing.
Compost
Food scraps and certified compostable materials are sent to an organics processing facility.
Recycling
Food scraps and certified compostable materials are sent to an organics processing facility.
Landfill (Limited & Strategic)
Sanitary and medical waste from designated areas such as portable toilets and the medical tent are safely disposed of to protect other diversion streams.
Big ideas, real impact.
Sustainability is a shared effort. Small actions by thousands of participants create a measurable impact.
Participants can help by:
Bringing a reusable water bottle
Using waste stations correctly
Carpooling, biking, or taking transit
Asking a Green Team volunteer if unsure
Looking Ahead
We are committed to continuous improvement. Upcoming priorities include expanding diversion streams, deepening community partnerships, improving impact measurement, and working toward long-term zero-waste certification standards.
Sustainability at TC10K is a journey — and each year we aim to run it better.
